Sourav dreams to make the country proud in the Commonwealth Games

“The environment of the slum area I live in is awful. Very easily anyone can fall into the wrong paths.  I have seen boys my age doing wrong things. They did not have the right people to guide them. I want to inspire them. It doesn’t matter where one has been raised. We can all achieve our dreams with the right kind of help. And I choose my karate as the medium.” said Sourav, confidence oozing from his voice.

Sourav Singh’s family hails from Bihar, the neighbour state of West Bengal but currently lives in Calcutta Rescue no 10 local slum area. His father works in a food company and his mother is a homemaker. Sourav has two elder sisters. One of them is married and the other one is an engineer.

“When I was 4 years old my grandfather brought me here to Kolkata,” Sourav explains. “He worked in a private company and wanted to secure my future. He admitted me to Calcutta Rescue No 10 school. The rest is history.”

Sourav is one of the star students Calcutta Rescue has ever had. He has always been the top student in his class. He is a very good singer and plays the guitar. He is good at public speaking. But he has excelled in Karate.

“I am really mad about Karate, ” said Sourav, “It is something I can do for hours. I have won 3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals so far at the national level, state level, and district level championships respectively. I was awarded my first beginner degree black belt certificate this year,” he continues, ” I want to represent my country in the Commonwealth Games in the field of Karate. I want to inspire the young generation to do something for the country in my own way.”

Sourav is currently studying in his second year  Botany Honours student in college. “I am very much interested in science and technology. My elder sister who is an engineer helped me nurture and grow my interest in science. She is the sole reason I took the Science stream for higher education.”

Calcutta Rescue Head of Education Ananya Chatterjee is proud of Sourav, “Sourav has always been a very attentive student. He gives his hundred per cent in everything he pursues. He scored 80% in his Class 12 board examination and was also awarded The Telegraph Scholarship for his outstanding performance in academics in 2020.”

Sourav is ever thankful for the presence of Calcutta Rescue in every endeavour of his life. “I can’t express my gratitude for Calcutta Rescue enough. I consider myself very lucky that the teachers took me under their wing at a very young age. Even now they are helping me with all the college and tuition fees.” Sourav said enthusiastically,  “Everything I am today is all thanks to Calcutta Rescue.”
