Calcutta Rescue social work team is now stronger with Souvik

“Calcutta Rescue not only supports children throughout their academic journey but also helps fulfil their dreams to pursue unconventional careers. I am impressed,” said Souvik, the new social worker in his first interaction with the team of Calcutta Rescue.

Souvik Sarkar joined Calcutta Rescue in May 2021 as the second social worker of the organisation. Before that, he has worked in many other organisations as a social worker. Souvik will be working with Suchandra Chatterjee, Calcutta Rescue Counsellor and Social Worker.

“I have a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Social Work. And then started working as an intern in a reputed NGO. I have worked in quite a few Nonprofit organisations as a field worker before I joined Calcutta Rescue.” said Souvik, ” I have expertise in field surveys, data assessment and documentation. I have conducted many workshops, sensitizing on reproductive and sexual health, adolescent health, menstrual hygiene, HIV & AIDS, STI, gender-based abuse and child protection.”

Souvik has 13 years of expertise under his belt. His role in Calcutta Rescue is to work along with Suchandra. He creates content for kids from non-formals (aged 4-6) to 18+, conducts classes on Google meet. He has taken classes on gender equality and domestic violence. However, his main role is to sensitise and talk about boys’ issues.

Calcutta Rescue Counsellor and Social Worker Suchandra Chatterjee says, “The boy students have a lot of things in their teenage years that they cannot express to anyone. They have a lot of questions regarding puberty. I am their counsellor but I am a woman. So they feel embarrassed to talk about that to me. Souvik is here to help me with that.”

Souvik agrees wholeheartedly. “I not only want to discuss their issues and help them through it, but also create an empathetic nature. Our society is patriarchal in nature. And the boys play a great role in creating a gender-equal society in future. I want them to become aware of the fact and become true human beings.”

Outside of his work Souvik is a sportsperson. He loves swimming, exercising, trekking and travelling. He says, “Exercising keeps me grounded for my work.”

Calcutta Rescue is delighted to have a great person like Souvik in the family.
