“Thank god I came to Calcutta Rescue at the right time. One day, I found a welt on my right hand. A small red mark under my finger. I didn’t know what had happened. But the welt was small and painless so I let it go thinking it would just go away. But it did not.” said Harishankar Jaiswara, a patient of Calcutta Rescue Nimtala Clinic.
In a few days, the welt on his right hand swelled up and the pain started.
Harishankar is 44 years old. He sells tea on the streets of Kolkata. Harishankar has a family of four. His two children are students and the wife is a homemaker. He is the sole earner of the family. “I am very poor. I roam around the streets with my kettle and sell tea to the passerby. If I cannot work, my family will starve” he said.
Harishankar went to see the local doctor who immediately referred him to the government hospital. He visited the hospital on 4 December 2020. The hospital did a surgery. The wound was filled with blood and puss that needed to be drained.
“The hospital did my surgery and prescribed medicines, but they were expensive and I could not buy them. They also told me to do regular dressings but said they won’t provide them. Dressing outside is expensive for me. Then I came to Calcutta Rescue.” Harishankar mentioned, “The hospital referred me here.”
On 9 December 2020 he came to Nimtala clinic. He was immediately provided with medicines and dressing materials. He was taught how to do it at home as well. After one month Calcutta Rescue is proud to say, Harishankar is out of danger.
He’s very happy now. “The doctors and staff helped me a lot. They dressed my wound with very much care.” he said, “I am thankful.”
