What we do
Calcutta Rescue USA is an organization supporting the Kolkata based NGO called Calcutta Rescue that has been operating since 1980’s. Our mission is to create opportunities and transform lives of the poor and destitute of Kolkata by providing healthcare, education and skill set for employment. We work in concert with other Support Groups based in Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and UK.
We strive to bring an awareness of Calcutta Rescue’s activities and achievements to the well-wishers of the poorest of Kolkata. We organize events, inform our donors about the progress we are making, and the recognitions we are receiving through many awards and citations. We also coordinate with other like-minded individuals and organizations.
Our organization is run by volunteers and 100 percent of your donations are sent to Kolkata where about 90 percent of the receipt goes directly to the benefit of the poor. Our members come from all walks of life, and we give our energy and money for a cause we believe in. We are a 501c3 tax-exempt organization and your donations qualify for tax deduction.

Kolkata is a city where affluence and extreme poverty live side by side. In this short video, we paint a picture of the living conditions of the extreme poor, and how we are changing their lives through healthcare, education, and opportunities for self employment. “Changed the Life of Shyam Shaw”
He was born in a slum, and lives with his family of four. His father earns the equivalent of two dollars a day. Shyam is bright, and with the good education that he is getting with Calcutta Rescue’s help, his and his family’s lives will be changed forever. Starving During Covid-19 Pandemic”
India was put on total lock-down for months. This is a story of two persons who made their living by selling vegetables in the footpath of Kolkata. With the lock-down that lasted for months, they had no income, and only option was starvation. Calcutta Rescue volunteers brought them food, and they survived . (1 min. 46 seconds video)
Get involved
Our ability to continue the humanitarian work for Kolkata’s poorest depend on the generosity of individuals and organizations. If you like our mission and what we are accomplishing, then please consider supporting us. Together we can help the poorest people in the society to pull themselves out of the cycle of poverty and disease and transform their lives.
You can also support us with your time and talent. We always look for volunteers who can help, especially in the fields of web design, social networking, and event organization.
We also look for volunteers for our operations in Kolkata, where they will work with volunteers from other Support Groups in Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and UK.

There are a variety of easy ways to make a donation to the charity, either directly to the charity in India or through one of its support groups around the world if you live in a country which has one.
Corporate
Calcutta Rescue welcomes support from businesses who want to help us improve the lives ot the poor in India. This might be a one-off donation, assistance in kind, or a longer term parternship around a specific project.
Volunteer
Volunteers from around the world play an important role in supporting the work of the team in India. These are primarily medical professionnals, but also those with relevant skills in IT, communication and a number of other fields.
